Oppression,
Series One, Study One

"Originally, I was thinking about the oppression of one's self by being a prisoner of one's own mind. Circumstances that would cause one to imprison themselves are in some case, circumstances which breach one's Human Right. But, as I was envisioning this painting, oppression of women, culturally and professionally became the basis of this work.

Because my painting could be listed under several of the Human Rights, I chose Right #1-All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. There are cultural influences throughout the world which take the freedom of women away, cause them to be regarded as completely inequal and inferior to men, and, treat them with little to no dignity at all.
